History of Crewe, Cheshire

Crewe is a town in the Cheshire East unitary authority situated in northwest-central England's historic county of Cheshire. It was founded as a result of the Grand Junction Railway Company moving its locomotive operations to Crewe in 1843 after opening its Liverpool to Birmingham line in 1837. In 1877, the settlement became an incorporated town. Early on, the railway company owned and controlled practically everything in Crewe, and the Crewe Corporation Act, passed in 1938, ended this monopoly. Even though the production of automobiles and clothes is one of its many other industries, trains are still significant today. The motorway connects Birmingham with Liverpool and Manchester, about three miles east of the borough.
